Scholars are increasingly facing the heat of anger from Ukrainians who view India as a supporting partner of Russia in the war.

The unfriendliness has increased as Ukraine launched its most recent offensive operations in the month of June. “Locals are asking them to leave the country. It’s got worse It’s got worse in the last eight weeks or so.” Time of India quoted the student, on the condition of anonymity, as saying.

Worried students are continuously writing to their respective state governments and the Centre, wanting to move to other countries for completing their medical studies.

War affecting academics

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, around 18,000 students were evacuated from the invaded country, hoping to be allowed to continue their remaining studies in Indian institutions or other foreign universities, but were refused.

Since January 2022, nearly 3,400 students have gone back to Ukraine to finish their respective studies even after acknowledging the risk.

“As per National Medical Council (NMC) guidelines, students who are studying abroad after December 2021 cannot transfer to any other university. This is why I and many other students had to come back here,” a student from Madhya Pradesh said.

“Sometimes shopkeepers don’t sell things to us. We face the same thing in our hostel. The staff behave rudely with us,” another troubled student said

Students who moved back to the war-affected country are living in constant fear, facing shortage of both electricity and water.
