The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained a 48-year-old Indian-origin Green Card holder, Paramjit Singh, for over two months. He was detained at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
According to a report published by India Today, Singh has been living in the United States since 1994 and is battling a brain tumour and heart conditions. Singh’s family alleged that he is being denied medical care during his detention and that his brain surgery has been delayed as a result.
On the other hand, ICE officials have cited two criminal cases to justify his detention. Singh’s family members have rejected these allegations, calling them “inaccurate.”
As per a BBC report, Singh was detained on July 30 after his return from India and has been kept at a detention centre in Clay County, Indiana.
The two cases against Singh include one from 1999, when he allegedly used a public telephone without paying charges and was fined $4,137.50. The second case involves an alleged forgery conviction, which his family has denied, saying that no such case exists.
In September, a 73-year-old Sikh woman was deported to India from the United States after being detained by ICE on September 8 on charges of living illegally in Northern California.
She was not allowed to meet any of her family members or her attorney. The woman, Bibi Harjit Kaur, had exhausted all her appeals to stay in the United States. Kaur’s attorney, Deepak Ahluwalia, posted a video on Instagram and said that her family was ready to cooperate with ICE and willing to send her back to India, but she was detained by the officials.
