The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Bangladesh Acting High Commissioner Nural Islam on Monday at 2 pm regarding security measures at the border, according to MEA.
“It was conveyed that with regard to security measures at the border, including on fencing, India observed all protocols and agreements between the two governments and between the Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh,” said MEA in a statement on Monday.
The development came after an Indian diplomat was summoned by Bangladesh on Sunday to discuss a “cooperative approach to combating crime” in border areas.
“We have an understanding regarding fencing the border for security purposes, and the two border forces, BSF and BGB, have been in regular communication,” Pranay Verma, Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, had told the media after the meeting.
“India reiterated its commitment to ensuring a crime-free border by effectively addressing the challenges of cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, movement of criminals, and trafficking,” said MEA, adding that “barbed wire fencing, border lighting, installation of technical devices, and cattle fences are measures for securing the border.”
The ministry further said that it was also conveyed that all earlier understandings will be implemented by Bangladesh and that there will be a cooperative approach to combating cross-border crimes.
Notably, tensions between two countries escalated last week as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) objected to Border Security Force (BSF) while installing single-row barbed wire at Sukdevpur in Malda’s Baishnabnagar. However, the fencing work was later resumed, but it was halted again following a flag meeting between the two forces.
