India And Ghana Share Colonial Scars But Unbroken Spirit, Says PM Modi In Ghana Parliament Address

PM Modi was conferred the national honour of Ghana, Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, by President John Dramani Mahama, in recognition of his “distinguished” statesmanship and influential global leadership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, expressing that he felt deeply honoured to speak in a country that radiates the spirit of democracy. During his speech, he took a moment to express greetings of 1.4 billion Indians to the people of Ghana. PM Modi highlighted the shared colonial past of India and Ghana, stating that “our spirits have always remained free and fearless” despite the scars of foreign rule. He also added that the friendship between the two countries is “sweeter” than the famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple (A delicacy of Ghana).

He said, “The histories of India and Ghana bear the scars of colonial rule, but our spirits have always remained free and fearless. We draw strength and inspiration from our rich heritage…Our friendship is sweeter than your famous, Sugar Loaf Pineapple.”

Addressing the Ghana Parliament, PM Modi said, “I am deeply honoured to address this esteemed house today. It is a privilege to be in Ghana, a land that radiates the spirit of democracy.”

PM Modi Appreciates Ghana

He appreciated people of Ghana for their warmth and strength. PM Modi said, “As the representative of the world’s largest democracy, I bring with me the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians. Ghana is known as the land of Gold, not just for what lies under your soil but as much for the warmth and strength in your heart.”

PM Modi mentioned that he paid tribute to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, a son of Ghana whose words continue to guide the world.

“Earlier today, I had the honour of paying tribute to our visionary and statesman and the beloved son of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He once said that the forces that unite us are greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart. His words continue to guide our shared journey,” PM Modi added.

PM Modi Thanks For The National Honour

PM Modi further added that he was moved by the gesture of receiving the national award from President Mahama, which he called an “honour.”  He thanked the people of Ghana on behalf of the Indians for the award.

“Last evening was a deeply moving experience, receiving your national award from my dear friend, President John Mahama is an honour…On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, I thank the people of Ghana for this honour,” PM Modi added.

Reflecting on common democratic spirit, PM Modi said, “India is the mother of democracy. For us, democracy is not merely a system; it is a part of our fundamental values…India has over 2,500 political parties, 20 different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who came to India have always been welcomed with open hearts.”

Notably, PM Modi arrived in Ghana, West Africa on Wednesday, marking it as the first Prime Ministerial visit from India to Ghana in over three decades. He was conferred the national honour of Ghana, Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, by President, John Dramani Mahama, in recognition of his “distinguished” statesmanship and influential global leadership.
