Imran Khan death rumour: Adiala Jail administration in Pakistan finally breaks silence, provides BIG update

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is lodged in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail since 2023. On Wednesday, there were reports that Khan had died in jail and was moved out of the facility.

Pakistan’s Adiala jail administration on Thursday shared a big update on former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health, dismissing the rumours that claimed he had been moved out of the facility. The jail administration stated that Khan remains inside the prison and is in good health. Khan is lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since 2023. PTI has constantly accused Pakistani military establishment and the government of torturing him during the jail term. The authorities, time and again have also rejected Khan’s family members from meeting him, citing “security concerns.”

What did Adiala Jail say?

On Wednesday, there were reports that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder had been moved out of Adiala jail and some even claimed that he had died. However, Adiala Jail has dismissed all such rumours regarding Khan and assured that his well-being is ensured. They also clarified that speculation about his health are baseless. “There is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala jail,” officials from the Rawalpindi prison said in a statement, as reported by Geo News. “He is fully healthy and receiving complete medical attention,” the statement added.

Earlier on Wednesday, after the rumours of his death spread across social media, his three sisters claimed that they were brutally assaulted by the police for merely demanding to meet the jailed leader. His sisters, Noreen Khan, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan alleged that the police assaulted them when they tried to meet him in jail where he has been imprisoned since 2023. The sisters added that they were beaten along with PTI supporters who gathered outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail this week, demanding that authorities allow them to meet Imran Khan.

Why is Imran Khan behind bars?

Khan was put behind bars in August 2023, following a series of convictions that dramatically shifted his political trajectory. His first major conviction came in the Toshakhana case, where he was accused of illegally selling state gifts for personal profit and failing to disclose the details in official records. This led to a prison sentence and disqualification from holding public office. Another significant blow came from the cipher case, in which Khan was accused of mishandling a confidential diplomatic cable. The court ruled that he had violated official secrecy laws, resulting in additional jail time. These convictions together ensured that the former prime minister remained in custody, even as appeals continue.
