New Delhi: Hundreds queued outside Windsor Castle in Berkshire, the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II, as it reopened to the public for visits on Thursday, following her death earlier this month.
The castle is open for public visit for a ticket price of around GBP 27.
The Queen was laid to rest in a private burial at George VI Memorial Chapel attended by King Charles III and immediate family members on 19 September.
Last week, Buckingham Palace released an image of the new chapel stone engraved with the Queen’s name, which replaces a black slab naming King George VI and Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, to include all four names.
The stone, made of black Belgian marble, sits in the King George VI Memorial Chapel which Queen Elizabeth commissioned in 1962 as a burial place for George VI, her father.
The brass scribbling on the stone reads “George VI 1895-1952 / Elizabeth 1900-2002” on the top two lines, followed by a garter star and then “Elizabeth II 1926-2022 / Philip 1921-2021” on the bottom two lines.
Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret, is also interred at the chapel, at Windsor Castle west of London.
Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, passed away on September 8 at the age of 96. She took her last breath at Balmoral Castle, her summer home in the Scottish highlands. Her reign as the queen of England lasted for over 70 years.
