Back in February, JD Vance asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office: “Have you said ‘thank you’ once?” But guess how many times Zelenskyy said “thank you” during his high-stakes meeting with US President Donald Trump on August 18 – Eight times!
At the beginning of the meeting in the White House, Zelenskyy said: “Thank you so much, Mr President, if I can, first of all, thank you for your attention. Thank you very much for your efforts, personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war. Thank you.”
One of the Ukrainian leader’s thank-yous went to the US first lady for writing to Putin about abducted children in Ukraine. He told Trump: “Using this opportunity, my thanks to your wife.”
“And thanks to all our partners and that you supported this format. And after our meeting, we’re going to have leaders who are around us, the UK and France, Germany… all partners around Ukraine supporting us. Thanks (to) them. Thank you very much for your invitation,” Zelenskyy continued.
Zelensky offered three more thank-yous, not directed at Trump, while answering reporters’ questions, a review of the transcript revealed. When asked what he wanted from Trump in exchange for a deal, he replied: “Everything”. He asked for a strong Ukrainian army: weapons, training, equipment, and intelligence.”
