A video circulating on the internet showed Hong at a snow-covered slope near the summit, standing without a safety rope. When Hong adjusted his position he mis stepped and before long he was sliding down the mountain side, out of site after sliding approximately 656 feet (200 metres). Other hikers in the area visibly expressed their horror at Hong’s fall.
According to the Chinese media outlet Red Star News, officials confirmed it could have been that Hong tripped on his crampons while trying to stand back up after untying the rope. Local authorities are looking into the incident.
“His family told Channel News Asia that this was Hong’s first visit to the mountain and had estimated the fall at 100 to 200 metres.”
Officials at the Kangding Municipal Education and Sports Bureau noted that Hong and his group failed to disclose their climbing plans and did not obtain the necessary authorization. After the incident, local authorities quickly deployed to perform a rescue.
Mount Nama, or Nama Peak, is a high mountain in the eastern Tibetan Plateau in Sichuan Province. It is a peak in the Gongga Mountain Range.
If you are considering a hike, it is essential to prepare properly. Climbing permits are required and local regulations must be adhered to. Local guides and porters are important for safety and to help with logistics. Hikers should acclimatize to the altitude by spending time at lower elevations. Hikers may also need to be prepared for unexpected snowstorms or freezing temperatures.
The trek to the base camp is approximately 15km, and the last push will be steep and technical. Climbers typically establish a base camp at around 4,800 metres before attempting to summit. They typically bring gear that includes crampons, ice axes, ropes and helmets. The summit affords expansive views of the mountain ranges and valleys surrounding the peak.
