Amid the implementation of the first phase of the Gaza peace plan brokered by US President Donald Trump, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine issued a joint statement rejecting any form of “foreign rule” in Gaza, asserting that governance of the Strip is a “Palestinian matter.”
While expressing this stance on Friday, the groups also signalled a willingness to allow Arab countries and the international community to participate in Gaza’s reconstruction efforts. They confirmed that an agreement has been reached on implementing the first phase of the deal and reiterated their commitment to securing the release of the remaining Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
In an interview with Sky News, Hamas official Basem Naim asserted that while Hamas will no longer be directly involved in governing Gaza following the implementation of Trump’s peace plan, there is no plan to fully disarm. He claimed that no one can deny the group the right to resistance by all means, including armed resistance.
