Industry experts and economists assert that US companies are now eyeing India for offshore operations through Global Capability Centres (GCCs) after US President Donald Trump hiked the H-1B visa fees to $100,000 (₹88 lakh).
According to Reuters, India is offering its services to many countries through GCCs, and it has become a hub for skill-based tasks such as AI and drug discovery.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order to raise the fee that companies pay to sponsor H-1B applicants to $100,000.
Under the proclamation, a $100,000 payment must accompany every new H-1B visa petition filed after the deadline, including entries in the 2026 lottery. The order also authorised the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department to coordinate all necessary measures for implementation.
Guidance has already been issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, US Customs and Border Protection, and the Department of State to ensure consistent enforcement across agencies, as per the statement issued by the Department of State.
As India has 1,700 GCCs with vast tech support origins, they have become high-value innovation centres in different fields, from German car manufacturing to drug discovery, the news agency Reuters reported.
The GCC hub provides field expertise and industry leadership to support critical business functions.
