New Delhi: A gunman opened fire in a school in Russia killing nine people, including five children, on Monday. Around 20 others were injured following the shootout.
According to news agency Reuters, the shooting took place in Izhevsk, capital of the Udmurtia region which is about 970 km east of Moscow. The motive behind the attack is still unclear.
Governor of the Udmurtia region, Alexander Brechalov, said in a video statement that the still unidentified shooter got into a school in Izhevsk, the region’s capital, killed a guard and some of the children there.
“There are victims among the children, there are wounded too,” Brechalov said.
The school has about 1000 students and 80 teachers.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said the victims killed in the attack involved two teachers and two security guards. Exact information was still being gathered on the number of people wounded.
