In another incident of a hate crime that has come to light from the United States, a Gujarati woman was shot dead in South Carolina. Following the killing, a suspect has been arrested and charged with her murder. The accused allegedly entered the store wearing a mask and shot her on Tuesday, September 16, at around 10:30 pm. The deceased has been identified as 49-year-old, Kiran Ben Patel, resident of Borsad town in the Anand district of Gujarat.
The suspected shooter has been identified as 21-year-old, Zaedan Mack Hill. Kiran had been living in South Carolina for over 20 years and was running a store in the area. At the time of incident, she was counting cash before closing the store when a masked gunman approached and shot her. Kiran tried to escape and ran out of the store, but the gunman chased after her and shot her eight times. She was shot in the parking lot of DD’s Food Mart. She is survived by a son and a daughter, who live in UK and Canada respectively.
How was hill arrested?
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, SWAT and Union Public Safety arrested the accused on Thursday after a stand-off. The officers had arrived at a residence on South Church Street with a search warrant and an arrest warrant for Hill.
Another incident
Earlier, on September 19, a 30-year-old Indian techie from Telangana was shot by the police in California, United States after he allegedly stabbed his roommate with a knife earlier this month. His family alleged racial discrimination and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to his death. The deceased techie was identified as Mohammed Nizamuddin, from Mahabubnagar in Telangana. He had gone for higher studies to the US in 2016. He had pursued a Masters in Computer Science at a Florida college and was working at a tech firm in Santa Clara.
