Protesters Storm Nepal Parliament; 18 Dead, Curfew Imposed In Kathmandu

The Government of Nepal has banned 26 social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, Viber, and Botim starting September 4, 2025.

A massive protest erupted in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, as thousands of citizens flooded the streets against the government. This protest is against the restrictions imposed on social media and the corruption prevalent in the government. The situation became more serious when some protesters entered the Parliament building, after which the police dispersed the crowd by firing tear gas shells.

According to local sources, this movement is not limited to the social media ban only. It is mainly led by the young generation of Nepal, which has long been dissatisfied with corruption, unemployment and government control over civil rights.

The government’s decision to ban social media platforms has caused great dissatisfaction among the people. This protest has now taken the form of a big mass movement. The incident of protesters reaching the Parliament building has also raised questions on the security system.

The protest has now spread to many areas of Kathmandu. People are raising strong slogans against the government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The city reverberated with slogans like “We want transparency”, “Give back our rights”, and “Stop corruption”. There have been clashes between police and protesters at several places.

To control the situation, the government has imposed curfew in important areas of the city. Also, the deployment of security forces has been increased at government buildings and important sites, further strengthening the security system.

This movement did not happen suddenly, but its preparations were going on for several days. An appeal for a nationwide protest on September 8 was already being made on social media, in which especially the youth and organizations working for digital rights played an important role. Despite the restrictions, people made this protest successful through alternative means of communication.

Political experts believe that this movement can bring a turning point in the political environment of Nepal. According to an analyst, “This is not just a matter of a ban on social media, but it is an explosion of years of discontent and systemic flaws – including lack of accountability and curtailment of democratic rights.”

The protest against the ban on social media escalated and turned violent. The situation took a downward turn as protesters clashed with the police, leading the authorities to implement riot control tactics. As per the latest update, fourteen people have lost their lives as the protest turned violent in Kathmandu. The protesters have claimed that the ban on social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other platforms would be detrimental to the nation.
