What happened to the US President?

Because he wanted to impress the actress, he committed such a dreadful act. Although the President’s life was saved, authorities sentenced the accused mad lover to jail. He confessed to his crime and expressed remorse for attacking the President.

The police and court deemed him mentally ill and mandated treatment. After nearly 40 years in jail, he was released due to good behavior. It has now been 43 years since the incident, but even at that time, such a public attack on the President had shocked even the policemen.

According to media reports, 43 years ago on March 30, 1981, John Hinckley Jr. attacked the then-President Ronald Reagan. The attack occurred amid tight security outside Washington DC. Six bullets were fired at the President, one of which struck his chest. He was promptly saved by being taken to the hospital.

Hinckley was in jail for 41 years

Hinckley was released in June 2022 after serving 41 years of his sentence. Due to his intense infatuation with actress Jodie Foster, which led to his mental illness, he committed the act. Considering his condition, the court did not find him guilty of attempted murder but incarcerated him. He achieved complete freedom only 2 years ago. Additionally, he was placed in a mental hospital in Washington due to worsening depression following the President’s shooting.

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was at a hotel to attend a program. As he was getting into his car to leave, Hinckley suddenly appeared in front of him, wielding a German-made Roem pistol. Hinckley discharged six rounds in rapid succession.

At that time, Ronald Reagan was not wearing a bulletproof jacket, although it had become mandatory for the President of America to wear one after President Kennedy’s assassination. Because Reagan was not wearing a jacket that day, a bullet penetrated his bulletproof car and struck him in the chest.

The attack also resulted in serious injuries to Ronald Reagan’s officers James Brady, Timothy McCarthy, and Washington police officer Thomas Delahunty.
