US social media sensation, widely renowned as the “nicest judge in the world,” Frank Caprio has died aged 88, his family said. Over his 40-year career in Rhode Island, the judge famously used compassion and humour to deliver judgements that took into consideration the personal circumstances of the people in the dock.
Videos of Judge Caprio patiently listening to cases have garnered billions of views on social media. Beyond these clips, his TV show Caught in Providence also drew billions of views, earning him the title “the nicest judge in the world.”
His death, following pancreatic cancer, was announced on his official Instagram account, where he was remembered for his “warmth” and “unwavering belief in the goodness of people.”
Judge Caprio presided over thousands of cases in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island, before embarking on a TV career.
His quintessential courtroom style created viral moments ranging from inviting children to sit with him behind the bench during cases to even announcing a mini judge plushie of himself.
His son recently thanked fans for their love and support, and urged people to “spread a little kindness” in his father’s memory.
On Instagram, Judge Frank Caprio was remembered by his 3.4 million followers for the kindness he inspired throughout his life. His show Caught in Providence earned multiple Daytime Emmy nominations, with Caprio himself nominated twice last year.
The show’s producers, Debmar-Mercury, praised his compassion and common-sense approach, calling his loss deeply felt. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, Caprio had shared updates about his fight, thanking supporters and asking for prayers during treatment setbacks. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce, along with five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
