New Delhi: France has urged its citizens currently staying in Iran to leave the country “as soon as possible,” warning that they risk “arrest, arbitrary detentions and unfair trial.”
“French nationals passing through Iran are invited to leave the country as soon as possible given the risk of arbitrary detention to which they are exposed,” the foreign ministry said in a Friday advisory,” the French foreign ministry said on Friday.
The ministry also warned that “Any French visitor, including dual nationals, is exposed to a high risk of arrest, arbitrary detention and unfair trial.”
“In this context, the ability of the French Embassy in Tehran to provide consular protection for nationals arrested or detained in Iran is very limited,” the embassy stressed, adding that “consular visits are not authorized in the case of a Franco-Iranian national, as Iran does not recognize dual nationality.”
In the case of arrest or detention, “the respect of fundamental rights and security of the person are not guaranteed,” the ministry added.
Death of a 22-year-old, Mahsa Amini, following her detention by Iran’s morality police sparked the protest all over Iran.
Amini’s name has since become a rallying cry for demonstrators across the nation.
France has been vocal in condemning her death as well as the Iranian government’s subsequent crackdown on protests.
