Five passengers died when a tourist bus crashed on a New York State highway on Friday. The accident occurred about 25 miles east of Buffalo when the bus was heading towards New York city while returning from Niagara Falls.
According to New York State Police, the passengers included people of Indian, Chinese and Philippine origin. Investigation has revealed that the bus driver was distracted, due to which he lost control of the vehicle and the bus went off the road while trying to turn sharply. Police Commander Major Andre Ray confirmed the deaths at the scene and said that there were no signs of any technical fault in the bus or the driver being drunk. No one has been charged yet.
A total of 54 people were on board the bus at the time of the accident. Some passengers were discharged from the hospital after receiving first aid, and no one is reported to be in critical condition.
The police present at the scene took the help of interpreters to assist the foreign passengers. Mercy Flight chief Margaret Farentino said eight helicopters were deployed for the rescue operation.
Police said the bus driver was safe and cooperating with the investigation. Governor Kathy Hochul said the state government was working with local agencies to conduct rescue efforts.
Senator Chuck Schumer expressed condolences to the deceased and thanked the rescue workers.
