Russia remains in shock, grappling with the unfolding events since Tuesday’s earthquake struck at 11:24 a.m. local time. The United States Geological Survey reported the quake’s epicentre was 78 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative centre of the Kamchatka region. Shortly after, Governor Vladimir Solodov issued a tsunami warning for Kamchatka. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake is the sixth-largest on record. Apart from Russia, the Tsunami waves struck the coastlines of Japan also on Wednesday. This was followed by a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The quake was located around 250 kilometres from Hokkaido.

New Zealand Issues Warning
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned of strong, unpredictable sea currents and surges along the coast.
“Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people. There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, and anyone in or near the water close to shore,” NEMA said. “People in or near the sea in the following areas should move out of the water, off beaches and shore areas and away from harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries.”
