Amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza, US President Donald Trump on Friday said Washington is in positive talks with the Palestinian group Hamas, urging them to immediately release all those taken hostage in the recent clashes, as reported by Aaj Tak.
“We are having very good talks with Hamas,” Trump said. “If Hamas continues to hold Israeli civilians hostage, the situation will become more difficult and dangerous. We said they should release the hostages now, and they will get better results in return, but if you don’t release them, the situation will become even more complicated.”
Trump also said that Hamas was making some demands which he termed “normal”, but at the same time he stressed the need to resolve the issue quickly so that peace can be restored.
According to Israeli figures, Hamas took more than 250,000 people hostage in Gaza after Israel attacked it in October 2023. Israel then launched airstrikes on Gaza, killing more than 60,000 people. The entire population of Gaza was displaced and international courts and human rights organizations have accused Israel of genocide and war crimes, although Israel has denied these allegations.
Trump, who promised a quick end to the Gaza war during his election campaign, expressed disappointment that no concrete solution has been found so far. Currently, Hamas holds about 50 Israeli hostages, of whom 20 are estimated to be alive.
As the crisis continues to escalate, the eyes of the international community are fixed on it, and the prospects for peace still remain uncertain. Trump’s appeal for immediate action highlights the dire situation, which has become the biggest humanitarian crisis in the region.
