US President Donald Trump has advised Ukraine to enter into a deal with Russia to end the conflict as “Russia is a very big power, and they’re not.” Quoting sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported that Trump’s comments came after his summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who reportedly demanded more Ukrainian land.
Trump conveyed the Putin proposal to freeze action on the frontlines if Kyiv surrendered the industrial region of Donetsk, one of Russia’s main targets, to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The agency, quoting sources, said that Ukrainian President Zelenskiy rejected the suggestion.
However, reports are suggesting that Trump would try to get the Russia and Ukraine leaders to get together to arrive at a solution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war that has cast its shadow over global peace and is impacting the global economic and geopolitical equations.
Trump posted on Truth Social: “It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which oftentimes does not hold up.” On the other hand, Zelenskyy’s post on X stated, “Stopping the killing is a key element of stopping the war.”
The Ukrainian President will head to Washington on Monday to discuss ending the deadly war that has raged since 2022, he announced on Saturday. Ahead of this, he recently held a phone call with Trump, during which the US President briefed him on the main points of his talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Moscow already controls nearly 19 to 20 percent of Ukrainian territory, including about three-quarters of Donetsk city.
