Pakistan’s ambassador to Turkmenistan, KK Ahsan Wagan, faced deportation from Los Angeles despite having valid travel documents and a proper visa, as reported by The News. The Pakistani diplomat spent his time in Los Angeles for personal leisure, despite having many years of experience in foreign service. However, when he arrived, US immigration authorities raised concerns about his entry due to “controversial visa references.”
As quoted by Jagran a Pakistani Foreign Ministry Official mentioned that, “Ambassador KK Wagan was deported from the US. He had an immigration objection which led to his deportation.”
The investigation of this incident has been assigned to Pakistan’s Los Angeles consulate, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Secretary Amina Baloch have been briefed on the matter. According to Pakistani media reports, Wagan needs to return to Islamabad for additional inquiries. The deportation of Wagan does not appear to be related to current US-Pakistan diplomatic strains, yet it could result from past work-related grievances mentioned by several sources.
As part of his diplomatic career, Wagan first served as the second secretary at the Pakistani embassy in Kathmandu and later as the deputy consul general at the Pakistani consulate in Los Angeles. Pakistan received praise from US President Donald Trump when he credited the nation for its help in arresting ISIS-K terrorist Muhammad Sharifullah after he led the 2021 Kabul airport bombing. Trump publicly announced Sharifullah’s arrest during his address to a joint session of Congress regarding the diplomat’s extradition procedures.
Few days ago, the expected travel ban from President Donald Trump may become official as soon as the following week, potentially imposing entry restrictions on individuals from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Three sources familiar with the matter say the decision stems from a government security and vetting risk evaluation of various countries.
