On Sunday morning, a huge fire broke out above an administrative building in the Pechersky district of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, which was triggered by Russia’s attack. Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, said via social media that the fire broke out when Russian forces targeted the city, and thick smoke was seen rising from the main building of the Ukrainian government after this.
Drones and missiles were used in the attack, which caused a lot of damage. According to Ukrainian officials, three people were killed, including an infant, and 18 people were injured. A young woman and infant were killed in the drone attack, while five people, including a pregnant woman, were injured and hospitalized. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko gave an update on the attack on Telegram, calling it a terrorist act targeting civilians.
Drone attacks caused several fires in Kyiv, burning down several government buildings. A residential building in the Darnitsky district was damaged after a fire broke out on two floors. A nine-story building in the western Sviatoshinsky district suffered damage to several floors, and several other multi-story buildings also suffered damage. Images shared by emergency officials showed smoke rising, and parts of several buildings had collapsed.
Debris from the falling drone fueled more fires, adding to the devastation. Civilians were seen running for safety as the fire spread while emergency teams worked to put out the blaze.
The Russian attack also affected other cities besides Kiev. Explosions in Kremenchuk rocked the area, causing damage to infrastructure and power outages in some parts. Mayor Vitaly Maletsky reported the blasts on Telegram and described it as chaotic. Russia’s attack also targeted the city of Kryvyi Rih, where urban and transport infrastructure suffered damage, although no injuries were reported.
In addition, southern Ukraine also did not escape the attacks. Civilian infrastructure and residential buildings in Odessa suffered severe damage and several apartment blocks caught fire. Regional governor Oleh Kiper confirmed the devastation.
Despite the widespread impact of the attacks, Moscow has not officially responded to it. Both Russia and Ukraine deny the accusation that they deliberately targeted civilians, but the deaths of innocent people are constantly increasing. After 20 months of conflict, the situation in Ukraine remains grave, and the crisis and violence caused by the war are constantly increasing.
