Some 27 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza that Hamas militants claimed Israel had occupied, Reuters reported. However, local media reported that the school building shelters people displaced by the ongoing war.

Israel claimed that the UN school in Nuseirat, central Gaza, housed a hidden Hamas command post. It says the building houses Hamas militants who took part in the October 7, 20023 attacks on Israel that triggered the war, now in its eighth month.

The Israeli military said steps were taken to minimize civilian casualties before the fighter jets struck.

However, Ismail Al-Thawabta, head of the Hamas-led government’s media office, rejected Israel’s claims.

‘The occupation is using lies to public opinion through false fabricated stories to justify a brutal crime against dozens of displaced people,’ Thawabta told Reuters.

The development comes as Israel said the ceasefire talks would not end the fighting.

On Wednesday, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the group would not agree to anything other than a permanent end to the Gaza war and Israel’s withdrawal as part of a ceasefire.

‘The resistance movement and the groups are serious and positive about any agreement based on a comprehensive cessation of aggression and a full withdrawal and exchange of prisoners,’ Reuters quoted Haniyeh as saying.

Haniyeh’s remarks were seen as a response to US President Joe Biden’s three-phase plan to end the war in Gaza. The plan includes a ‘sustainable ceasefire’ and Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza if Hamas releases all hostages.

Meanwhile, talks between Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party on post-war settlement in the Palestinian territories are likely to take place in China in mid-June, Reuters reported. China and Russia have already held two rounds of negotiations on a solution.
