Indicating a troubling comeback of the virus that initially appeared more than five years ago, Covid-19 cases are once again climbing in various regions of Asia. Highly populated financial hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore have seen notable spikes in infections, while health authorities in China and Thailand are also dealing with new outbreaks.
While in the past there have been stable periods, the current wave happens when respiratory viruses usually lessen. After noticing a rise in Covid-19 cases, the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection has released an alert to the public. Head of the Centre’s Communicable Disease Branch, Albert Au, has noted that the positive results for the virus are more common this year than last year.
The week ending May 3 saw Hong Kong report a weekly total of 31 severe cases, the highest since last year. Besides more people testing positive, viral material in sewage is also on the rise, the local press reported. At the same time, an increasing number of people are looking for medical care at a hospital or clinic because of COVID-19 symptoms. The entertainment sector in the city has felt the impact, as well. The virus has been detected in renowned Hong Kong singer Eason Chan, which led him to cancel his shows in Taiwan. His case has caused concern and renewed the need to stay safe.
