Several reports and social media posts claim that China has presented the world’s best defence attack helicopter, the Z-10. It is also claimed that the chopper is equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI), recognition, and surveillance systems, and that it is superior to America’s Apache AH-64E.
However, analysts believe that the claims about the Z-10 are not accurate. They say the Z-10 is a strong helicopter, but it still lags behind the Apache in several categories.
The Z-10 has been developed by Changhe Aircraft Industries Corporation and is the main attack helicopter of China’s People’s Liberation Army. Its first prototype flew in 2003 and it was commissioned in 2010. Among its recent upgrades is the Z-10ME version, which has been supplied to Pakistan.
Key features of the Z-10
Engine and Performance:
The new version is equipped with WZ-9G or WZ-16 engines, which perform better in high-altitude regions such as Tibet or the Karakoram.
Weapons:
The Z-10 is equipped with a 23 mm or 30 mm chain gun, anti-tank missiles such as the HJ-10 or CM-502KG, rocket pods, and air-to-air missiles. The Z-10 is capable of attacking tanks, infantry, and enemy helicopters.
The Apache is an experienced and war-tested helicopter. It has been used extensively during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Better aspects of the Apache:
The AH-64 Apache has a Longbow radar capable of tracking more than 250 targets simultaneously. It is also equipped with Hellfire missiles, has greater combat experience, and features superior sensor fusion and networking.
Benefits of the Z-10 / Z-10ME:
Better performance at high altitudes, lighter weight, and longer operational range.
AI claims:
The Z-10 has advanced avionics, but there is no proof of the presence of advanced AI. The Apache has advanced automation, but neither helicopter features generative AI capabilities.
Specialists say the Z-10 is a good helicopter but is not combat-proven. Pakistan has purchased the Z-10ME, while India has procured the Apache.
China continues to upgrade the Z-10 by adding long-range missiles and other improvements, but it still cannot be termed the world’s best attack helicopter.
