Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday sent a message of condolence to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu over a deadly bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Morbi city, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
“On behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people, I would like to express our deep condolences to the victims and extend our sincere sympathy to their families and the injured,” Xi said, according to CCTV, as reported by Reuters.
A 140-year-old bridge, which reopened last week after repair and renovation, collapsed on Sunday evening, killing over 130 people.
World leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, US President Joe Biden and others, have extended their condolences in the tragic incident.
The Gujarat government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased, while PM Narendra Modi dedicated a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of those killed in the mishap.
