China has reacted to the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict sentencing former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. On Tuesday, China said that the death sentence awarded to Sheikh Hasina is an internal matter of Bangladesh. The country also added that Bangladesh is a good neighbour.
“The accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina committed crimes against humanity by her incitement order and by her failure to take preventive and punitive measures under Charge 1,” the International Crimes Tribunal said.
Hasina, who fled the country in August 2024, has been living in New Delhi since then.
Chinese spokesperson Mao Ning said, “It is an internal matter of Bangladesh.”
Mao added that China is committed to a policy of good neighbourliness and friendship toward all citizens of Bangladesh. She said that China hopes Bangladesh achieves unity, stability, and development.
The country’s former prime minister is accused of directing the use of helicopters, drones, and live ammunition to contain the protests. Kamal and Mamun allegedly relayed and enforced these orders through their chain of command, and prosecutors say this amounted to crimes against humanity through orders, abetment, and conspiracy.
