China Hit-And-Run Accident: In a tragic incident, at least 35 people were killed and 43 severely injured after a car rammed into pedestrians at a sports centre in Zhuhai, South China. Police arrested the 62-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname Fan, while he was fleeing the scene, officials said.
The incident took place around 7:48 pm on Monday, when a car ploughed into people who were exercising outside the sports centre.
Police said, “A small SUV through the gate and forced his way into the city’s sports centre, ramming people who were exercising on the internal roads of the sports centre.” The accused was admitted to hospital and is receiving medical treatment as he was unconscious due to injuries.
Police added that the attacker is in a coma after self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other parts of his body and unable to undergo interrogation.
China Hit-And-Run Accident: Man Was ‘Upset Over Divorce’
According to reports, the driver was allegedly upset over his divorce settlement and asset division. Police mentioned that Fan’s actions were fueled by these things. The police had found him cutting himself in his car. He was immediately sent to the hospital for treatment.
As per BBC report, eyewitnesses called the attack pre-planned and deliberate. The local police on Tuesday said that preliminary investigation suggested Fan’s actions were triggered by property division following his divorce.
Chinese President Orders Action
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged all-out efforts to treat those who were injured in incident in country’s Guangdong Province. He has directed the perpetrator be “severely punished according to the law.”
Details of the deceased have not been disclosed yet and investigation is going on.
Footage of the incident showed people lying motionless on the ground. Others were seen frantically attempting to resuscitate the unconscious.
