United States President Donald Trump on Monday addressed Charlie Kirk’s memorial service held at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. He delivered an emotional tribute condemning the attack that took conservative activist Kirk’s life on September 10 at the Utah University rally. Trump stated that the bullet that killed Kirk was aimed at every conservative, emphasising he was killed for expressing the ideas that they believed in.
“The gun was pointed at him, but the bullet was aimed at all of us. That bullet was aimed at every one of us. Charlie was killed for expressing the very ideas that virtually everyone in this arena and most other places throughout our country deeply believed in,” Trump said.
What did Trump say?
Trump attacked radicals and their allies in the media, alleging that they tried to silence Charlie because he was winning big in his life. “The radicals and their allies in the media… tried to silence Charlie for a simple reason because he was winning Big. They lied about him because they did not want you to listen to him or to learn from him,” he added.
Addressing the broader implications of political intolerance, Trump warned against the dangers of ideological extremism. He criticised the growing mindset or a kind of thinking currently prevalent in America’s political landscape that eventually leads to killing of individuals like Kirk.
“No side in American politics has a monopoly on disturbed or misguided people – but there’s one part of our political community which believes they have a monopoly on truth, goodness, and virtue, and concludes they should also have a monopoly on power, thought, and speech. Tragically, atrocities of the kind we saw in Utah are the eventual consequence of that kind of thinking. If speech is violence, then some are bound to conclude that violence is justified to stop speech,” Trump said.
Trump calls Kirk’s shooter as ‘radicalised, cold-blooded monster’
In his address, Trump called the accused in Kirk’s killing, Tyler Robinson, a “radicalised, cold-blooded monster.” He reiterated that he will receive the punishment for the crime he has committed. “God willing, he will receive the full and ultimate punishment for his horrific crime,” Trump said. He also lashed out at people who celebrated Kirk’s tragic death. “Some of the very people who call you a ‘hater’ for using the wrong pronoun were filled with glee at the killing of a father with two beautiful young children,” he said.
