Chandra Grahan 2025: Lunar Eclipse To Illuminate Skies On THIS Date, Visible Across 15 Cities In India – Check Timing

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth aligns perfectly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its darkest shadow (umbra) over the lunar surface. During this, sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out blue light and giving the Moon a red-orange glow.

Chandra Grahan 2025: Skywatchers are going to witness the first celestial event of September this week. The full lunar eclipse of this year, which will turn the Moon into a glowing red “blood moon” will be visible across Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. Unlike most lunar eclipses that are visible only in select regions, this one can be seen by over 7 billion people worldwide.

What Causes A Total Lunar Eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth aligns perfectly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its darkest shadow (umbra) over the lunar surface. During this, sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out blue light and giving the Moon a red-orange glow. While the eclipse lasts for several hours, the most spectacular moment is when it turns red as the totality peaks.

Blood Moon To Be Visible In THESE Cities

In India, it will be clearly visible in 15 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Patna, Bhopal and Bhubaneswar. However, the sighting depends on the weather.

In eastern Indian cities like Kolkata and Guwahati, the beginning of the eclipse will be clearly visible due to earlier moonrise. Meanwhile, in western cities like Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the eclipse will be visible, but the moonrise will occur later.

Sutak Kaal

According to Hindu belief, Sutak Kaal will start nine hours before the time of eclipse. The doors of temples will be closed during Sutak Kaal. This implies that Sutak Kaal will begin at 12:57 pm on September 7 and last until the end of the eclipse on September 8, 1:26 am. In India, many people refrain from cooking, eating and performing auspicious tasks during the Sutak period. The doors of the temple will be opened only after the eclipse ends on September 8 after purification in the morning.
