New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping has secured the position of country’s top position. He now stands among the likes of most influential leaders of China ever since the Chinese Communist Party was founded by Mao Zedong.
Jinping elected as General Secretary of CPC
Xi Jinping was elected at the post of General Secretary of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at the first plenary session held on Saturday as reported by news agency Xinhua.
Elected as Chairman of Military Commission
The session was presided over by Xi Jinping himself. It was attended by 203 members of the 20th CPC Central Committee and 168 alternate members. Moreover, he was named as the chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission.
National Congress ends
After a week of deliberations, the once in a five years National Congress came to an end. The newly established Central Committee, the primary leadership body of the party, was made public during the Congress and featured Xi. Only 11 of the 205 members mentioned are women, according to CNN.
Since the Chinese Premier, who is the second-highest ranking official behind Xi, is not included in the new Central Committee, Li will step down from his party position.
Hu Jintao was escorted out from the Great Hall of People
The unceremonious retirement from Congress of former President Hu Jintao caused outrage on Saturday. During the closing ceremony, the 79-year-old former leader, Xi Jinping’s predecessor, was unannouncedly taken out of the hall by two men.
Hu was reportedly “not feeling well” when he was suddenly pulled from the 20th Congress of China’s Communist Party’s closing ceremony.
Beijing claims Hu was unwell
According to Chinese state media, Hu was “not feeling well” when he was unexpectedly removed from the closing ceremony of the 20th Congress of China’s Communist Party on Saturday.
“Xinhuanet reporter Liu Jiawen has learned that Hu Jintao insisted on attending the closing session… despite the fact that he has been taking time to recuperate recently,” Xinhua said on Twitter.
“When he was not feeling well during the session, his staff, for his health, accompanied him to a room next to the meeting venue for a rest. Now, he is much better,” the state agency added.
Beijing supports Moscow
The congress took place at one of the most perilous periods in international affairs in recent years. A war is raging in Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin attempts to establish his credentials as a great Russian leader, and China remains a staunch supporter of this would-be tsar.
At the same time, Taiwan Strait tensions are at their highest in decades, as China attempts to pummel Taipei into acquiescence.
