London: United Kingdom’s former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak is all set to become the new Prime Minister of Britain as his rival Penny Mordaunt backs out from the top post race on Monday.
According to media reports, Rishi Sunak currently has the support of 192 Conservative MPs while his opponent, Penny Mordaunt, has 27 MPs backing her.
Reports also suggest that after dropping out of the PM race, Mordaunt endorsed Sunak for prime minister post.
In a tweet she said: “These are unprecedented times. Despite the compressed timetable for the leadership contest it is clear that colleagues feel we need certainty.
“They have taken this decision in good faith for the sake of the country.”
“We have now chosen our next Prime Minister. This decision is an historic one and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support,” Mordaunt said.
She added: “We all owe it to the country to each other and to Rishi to unite and work together for the good of the nation.
