Pope Francis, who was 88 years old and recovering from double pneumonia, has died at his home in Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday.
The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis died at 7:35 in the morning. Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, a top official at the Vatican, said, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”
He was the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church. This year, he did not attend the traditional Good Friday procession, the third year in a row he missed the event.
The Pope made a short appearance on Sunday morning during a private meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Pope Greets Crowd on Easter Sunday
Even though doctors told Pope Francis to rest, he made a surprise public appearance on Easter Sunday. It was his first time in public since being treated for double pneumonia. He greeted a crowd of 35,000 people in St. Peter’s Square, waving and giving blessings from his popemobile.
Pope Francis was one of the oldest Popes in the history of the Church.

Prime Minister Modi shared his feelings on X, saying, “I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and all-round development. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace.”
German chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz said, “Francis will be remembered for his tireless commitment to the weakest members of society, to justice and reconciliation.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog called Pope Francis a “man of deep faith, peace and compassion.”
European Union President Roberta Metsola, calling him “The People’s Pope,” shared her message on X:
“Europe mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His contagious smile captured millions of people’s hearts across the globe. ‘The People’s Pope’ will be remembered for his love for life, hope for peace, compassion for equality & social justice. May he rest in peace.”
