Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday as Prime Minister and Liberal Party Leader. The announcement was made in a high anticipated press conference on Monday. While announcing his resignation Trudeau cited the need of new leadership in the Liberal Party setup. Trudeau’s decision is very important from the upcoming general elections in Canada set to take place later this year. However, Trudeau might have resigned from his position today but there had been speculations regarding his decision from before itself.
While addressing the press briefing in Ottawa, Justin Trudeau stated that the ‘internal battles’ within the party led him to step down as the Canadian Prime Minister. Trudeau added that he took the decision after having a long discussion regarding the matter with his wife and children. He said, “I have informed my party and the Governor that I intend to resign as leader of the party as well as prime minister of Canada, and will do so as soon as the my successor is appointed. I hereby prorogue the Parliament until March 24 in order to initiate the process of finding a new leader to lead the party and Canada until elections scheduled for later this year.”
As per the constitution of Canada, the ruling party will have a time of 90 days to select its new leader in such case when the current leader resigns.

Justin Trudeau had been facing a lot of criticism regarding his working style from a long time and some voices were raised within his party. Trudeau was deeply criticised by the MPs of his party and the opposition for worsening relations with India. Also, there was a deep influence of Khalistani leadership in Justin Trudeau’s government which led to Anti-India activities in the country. The Canadian PM was badly exposed in front of the whole world when he admitted that he alleged India of killing Hardeep Singh Nijjar without any strong proof.
