An Israeli diplomat in China was reportedly stabbed in a suspected terrorist attack, as confirmed by the Israeli foreign ministry to the Times of Israel on Friday. As per the reports, the diplomat is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital and is in a stable condition.
This incident occurs against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas, marked by the latter’s call for a “day of rage” on Friday. As a response, Israelis and Jews worldwide have been advised to remain on high alert.
The attack on the Israeli diplomat has added strain to relations between Israel and China. Israel’s envoy expressed “deep disappointment” to Beiging over China’s lack of condemnation of recent Hamas attacks. Israel has been vocal about its concerns regarding China’s stance on the ongoing conflict.
The week-long conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in over 1,200 Israeli and 1,530 Palestinian casualties, with thousands injured and hundreds of thousands displaced. Israel appears to be preparing for a substantial ground offensive on the Gaza Strip in response to the militant attacks.
On Friday, Israel’s military issued an evacuation order for all civilians in Gaza City, home to more than 1 million people, to relocate south within 24 hours. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant had previously stated, “Now is a time for war.”
Israel has pledged to target the Hamas terrorist group, including their tunnels, military compounds, senior operatives’ residences, and weapons storage warehouses among 750 military targets struck overnight.
A ground invasion of the densely populated Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million people, presents significant risks, with Hamas issuing threats regarding Israeli hostages.
Additionally, pro-Palestinian protests were expected to take place worldwide, and the United States and regional leaders were planning meetings in response to concerns about the conflict potentially spreading.
