London: Queen Elizabeth II, longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, died on Thursday afternoon, The Royal Family informed on Thursday night.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” The Royal Family said in a Twitter post at 11pm.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the post added.

The 96-year-old was under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became worried for her health, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The monarch pulled out of a virtual Privy Council on Wednesday, a day after appointing Liz Truss as PM at her home in the Scottish Highlands.
