A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by China’s Hainan Airlines made an emergency landing at Rome’s Fiumicino airport soon after takeoff. The flight was bound for Shenzhen, China and had taken off from Rome’s Fiumicino airport on Sunday. The flight was forced to resort to emergency landing after its right engine caught fire following a suspected bird strike, reported officials.
The flight carried 249 passengers and 16 crew members at the time of incident. It landed safely after dumping fuel over the sea. The Italian Coast Guard in its statement confirmed that the incident was caused by a bird strike, which poses serious threat to aircraft safety. Airport official stated that there were no delays to air traffic at Fiumicino airport. Additionally, no injuries were reported.
Footage captured by the witnesses shows flickering flames from the engine, with yellow-orange blaze mid-air. The aircraft continued its course to before turning back to airport in Rome.
