New Delhi: Author of Satanic Verses Salman Rushdie was attacked by a man on stage in New York. The incident occurred at the Chautaqua Institution.

A man went on to the stage as Rushdie was being introduced for a lecture. The man took hold of Rushdie and started stabbing and punching him.

The author was taken for treatment and the mand who attacked him has been restrained. Rushdie’s condition was not immediately.

Salman Rushdie’s book ‘The Satanic Verses’ was banned in Iraq in 1988. Many Muslims considered this book as blasphemous.

In the following year, Iran’s leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeni issued a edict (fatwa) calling for Rushdie’s death.

A bounty worth of $3 million was also offered to anyone who kills Rushdie.
