Bangladesh Violence LIVE: Bangladesh is witnessing widespread unrest following the outrage over the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, a prominent leader from the 2024 student uprising, was attacked during his campaign for the upcoming national elections in Dhaka. He was rushed to nearby hospitals, where he remains in critical condition.
Following Hadi’s killing, social media videos showed protesters vandalising and setting fire to the offices of Daily Prothom Alo and Daily Star, two of Dhaka’s major newspapers. Journalists, staff, and others inside the buildings used social media to report the incidents and appeal to the public to halt the violence.
Sharif Osman Hadi was a youth leader linked to Inquilab Mancha, a socio-cultural platform formed after the July 2024 revolt. The 32-year-old was also preparing to contest the upcoming national elections.
Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in the head last Friday while campaigning in Bijoynagar, Dhaka. He was travelling in a rickshaw when a masked attacker, riding on the back of a moving motorcycle, opened fire.
Hadi was critically injured in the attack and was first taken to a local hospital in Bangladesh. He was later airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment. As reported by Reuters, he remained on life support for six days before dying on Thursday.
Following his death, protests turned violent in many areas, raising serious concerns about law and order in Bangladesh during a sensitive political period.
Anti India slogans grew prominent as the protest intensified. In a number of places, protesters tried to march in the direction of Indian diplomatic facilities.
Amid the turmoil, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's home at Dhanmondi-32, which had already been demolished before, was vandalized and set on fire once more.
At approximately 11:15 p.m., the Awami League's party office in Rajshahi was reportedly destroyed, and the residence of former Chittagong mayor Mohiuddin was also set on fire.

At least 25 journalists from The Daily Star were rescued more than four hours after a mob stormed the newspaper’s office in Dhaka’s Kawran Bazar, according to BD News.
The crowd targeted the English-language daily around midnight on Friday. Earlier, protesters had attacked the Bengali-language daily Prothom Alo, vandalising the building and setting it on fire while chanting slogans, the report added.

Following Osman Hadi’s death, protesters tried to storm and damage the Assistant High Commission in Chittagong last night, but security forces successfully prevented the attack.
The next day, demonstrators targeted the Assistant High Commissions in Rajshahi and Khulna, leading to the closure of visa application centers and heightened security deployment.
On 16 December, protesters targeted the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, forcing the visa application center to close temporarily.
