Bangladesh Violence Live: Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, on Friday urged citizens to remain calm and resist violence by “fringe elements” as fresh unrest erupted in Dhaka following the arrival of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi’s body from Singapore.
According to police, alleged radical right-wing activists set fire to the main office of the left-leaning cultural organisation Udichi Shilpigoshthi shortly after Hadi’s body reached the capital. The fire destroyed the office completely, said Udichi general secretary Jamshed Anwar. Fire services later brought the blaze under control, while heavy deployment of police, BGB and army personnel was seen in the area to maintain law and order.
Who was Sharif Osman Hadi?
Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent youth leader and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha. He had played an active role in last year’s student-led protests, known as the July Uprising, and was also a candidate in the upcoming February 12 general elections.
Hadi was shot by masked gunmen on December 12 and was undergoing treatment in Singapore, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport under tight security amid public mourning.
Government vows swift justice
In a televised address, Muhammad Yunus assured the nation that those responsible for Hadi’s murder would be brought to justice swiftly, stating that no leniency would be shown. He also appealed to citizens to exercise patience and restraint during this tense period.
