A Bangladeshi Member of Parliament, Anwarul Azim, has been reported deceased in Kolkata by the West Bengal Police, according to a Bangladeshi government official.
Anwarul, a member of the ruling Awami League in Bangladesh, had traveled to Kolkata for medical treatment on May 12. Subsequently, he was reported missing. The Kolkata Police filed a general diary on May 18 regarding his disappearance.
After an initial complaint was filed at Kolkata’s Baranagar Police Station, the last known location of the Bangladeshi MP was traced to the Newtown area, according to police sources. Police sources have stated that the three-time MP Anwarul was killed in a flat in the Newtown area, where he had gone to meet someone.
Anwarul Azim, who was also the president of Kaliganj Upazila Awami League, went to visit his family friend Gopal Biswas at his home in Kolkata around 7pm on May 12, according to sources.

After leaving, Azim informed his friend Gopal in the evening that he was heading to Delhi and would call him after arriving there. The lawmaker also cautioned his friend not to call him too.

On May 15, Azim sent another WhatsApp message to Gopal informing him that he had reached Delhi and was with VIPs. He also mentioned that there was no need to call him. Azim forwarded the same message to his personal assistant, Rouf.
On June 17, after Anwarul’s family was unable to reach him, they contacted Gopal, informing him that they could not get in touch with Anwarul. The family filed a police complaint in Dhaka on the same day. Since then, the MP has been untraceable.
During the investigation, a person confessed to the police in Bangladesh that he had killed Anwarul Azim. This information was also conveyed to the police authorities in Kolkata, according to police sources
However, the dead body has not been recovered from anywhere in Newtown yet.
Further investigation is being conducted by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate regarding the matter. Subsequently, a search operation has been launched in Kolkata to trace the three-time Awami League MP.
