Amid political unrest in Bangladesh after Hadi’s death, Yunus assures election set for February 12, says ‘We want to make it remarkable’

Speaking with US Special Envoy Sergio Gor, Muhammad Yunus emphasised the nation’s eagerness to exercise its voting rights and outlined efforts to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polls.

Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Monday reiterated his commitment to hold general elections on February 12. He emphasised that Bangladesh is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights. Yunus made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, at approximately 7:30 pm. This development comes at a time when Inquilab Mancha on Monday, demanded that the killers of its convenor, Hadi, be brought to justice before Bangladesh’s 13th national election and referendum.

Bangladesh election on time, says Muhammad Yunus

“The nation is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights which were stolen by the autocratic regime”, Yunus said, while speaking to Gor. Their discussion, lasted about half an hour and focused on trade and tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States, the upcoming general election, the country’s democratic transition, and the murder of young Bangladeshi political activist Sharif Osman Hadi, as posted by Yunus on X.

According to the post shared by Yunus, Sergio Gor, who also serves as the US Ambassador to India, congratulated him for his leadership during recent tariff negotiations. He informed that Bangladesh has succeeded in reducing US reciprocal tariffs on its goods to impressive 20 percent. He added that Gor also discussed the funeral of Osman Hadi, who was laid to rest on Saturday, December 20.

On the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, Yunus reiterated his commitment to conduct free, fair and peaceful polls. He noted that that supporters of the ousted autocratic regime are allegedly spending millions of dollars to disrupt the electoral process and their fugitive leader is also inciting violence, but the interim government is “fully prepared” to deal with any challenges

“We have roughly 50 days to go before the election. We want to hold a free, fair and peaceful election. We want to make it remarkable,” Yunus said.
