Pakistan Floods: Severe floods in Balochistan, Sindh and other provinces have added to the woes of Pakistan. In such a situation, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has advocated the normalisation of business ties with India.
Some other ministers and officials have talked about starting the import of fruits and vegetables without delay. But the Government of India has not officially received any request from Pakistan in this regard so far.
Pakistan may resume import of fruits and vegetables from India
Indian officials say that as far as exporting fruits and vegetables to Pakistan is concerned, it can be started with a delay of only a few hours. Sources said that only after the proposal officially comes, further steps will be taken from India’s side.

When India decided to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir in August, 2019, Pakistan had decided to end business relations with India in protest. In such a situation, the government of Pakistan will have to take the first step to open imports from India.
Price of vegetables in Pakistan has increased three to four times in the last week
The prices of potatoes, onions, tomatoes have increased three to four times in the last one week in Pakistan. Seeing this situation, it has been said first by the Finance Minister and later on behalf of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry that the import of vegetables from India should be considered to be opened immediately.
Earlier, PM Shahbaz Sharif had said in June 2022 that it would be good for India and Pakistan to resume bilateral trade. He had termed trade with India as important to strengthen Pakistan’s economy. If seen in this way, the possibilities of trade with India are being discussed with the arrival of the Sharif government.

Pakistan had decided in August 2019 to stop imports from India
In the past too, Pakistan had indicated several times to take steps to improve business relations with India, but later withdrew it as political agitation increased. For example, in March 2021, it was decided to import five lakh sugar from India, but after a few days that decision was canceled.
In the year 2012, the decision to give India the Most Preferred Business Nation (MFN-Must Favored Nation) status was almost done and it was also announced by the then Commerce Minister but it was never implemented. In 2014, India also abolished MFN status for Pakistan.
