Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday was awarded the Order of Oman, the Sultanate’s highest civilian honour, by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. The visit marks the final leg of his tour, following stops in Ethiopia, where he was conferred the country’s highest award, and Jordan, which he visited on the first leg of his journey. PM Modi was conferred with Ethiopia’s highest civilian award – Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia. He has received 29 foreign State awards so far.
The name of the honour is Order of Al Said, Oman’s highest award, founded in 1913 by Sultan Taimur bin Faisal, later revived by Sultan Qaboos, and typically awarded to foreign heads of state. Instituted in 1970 by Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Order of Oman has been bestowed upon select global leaders in recognition of their contribution to public life and bilateral relations.
The recognition highlights PM Modi’s contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Oman. The prestigious award has previously been bestowed upon global figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Emperor Akihito of Japan, Nelson Mandela, and King Abdullah of Jordan. PM Modi has dedicated the honour to the age-old friendship between the two countries and called it a tribute to the warmth and affection between the 1.4 billion people of India and the people of Oman, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted.

PM Modi’s Oman visit
Interestingly, PM Modi’s visit to Oman coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Earlier in the day, PM Modi addressed the India-Oman Business Forum in Muscat, which saw participation by leading business representatives from both countries in the fields of energy, agriculture, logistics, infrastructure, manufacturing, health, financial services, green development, education, and connectivity.
Addressing the event, PM Modi highlighted the centuries-old maritime trading ties between the two countries, from Mandvi to Muscat, which he stressed, today forms the bedrock of vibrant commercial exchanges. He asserted that 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Oman represent the trust and friendship built over centuries. PM Modi further called upon the business leaders to realise the full potential of India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership [ CEPA], which he described as the blueprint for India-Oman shared future.
