Kabul: A security guard was wounded on Friday by shots fired at Pakistan’s embassy in the Afghanistan capital. The attack targeted the head of mission, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani, who escaped unscathed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called it “an assassination attempt” on the head of the mission and demand immediate investigation & action against perpetrators.

“I strongly condemn dastardly assassination attempt on Pakistan’s Head of Mission, Kabul,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle.

“Salute to brave security guard, who took bullet to save his life. Prayers for the swift recovery of security guard. I demand immediate investigation & action against perpetrators of this heinous act,” he added.

An embassy official said a lone attacker “came behind the cover of houses and started firing”, as reported by AFP.

“The ambassador and all the other staff are safe, but we are not going outside of the embassy building as a precaution,” he said.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi strongly condemned the incident, wishing for speedy recovery of the security guard.

He said that Afghanistan will never allow “selfish people” to compromise the security of the diplomatic missions in Kabul.

In another tweet, Balkhi said that the security agencies will investigate the incident after identifying the perpetrators and punishment will be given to those responsible.

Express Tribune citing sources said that the security guard was shot three times in the chest and was shifted to the hospital for medical assistance, adding that there were not many people at the embassy due to weekly holiday on Friday.
