Afghanistan Earthquake Death Toll Crosses 1,400; India Extends Humanitarian Assistance

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Monday morning, with tremors felt across the region, including parts of Pakistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

Afghanistan Earthquake: The devastating earthquake in Afghanistan has claimed over 1,400 lives as of Tuesday, leaving thousands more injured. A series of earthquakes struck eastern Afghanistan on Monday, initially killing over 800 people and injuring more than 2800. Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, however, the difficult terrain has hindered rescue efforts in isolated villages, the authorities stated.

Notably, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Monday morning, with tremors felt across the region, including parts of Pakistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). This was followed by a series of aftershocks with magnitudes ranging between 4 and 5.

Afghanistan Earthquake: India Extends Humanitarian Assistance

In view of the damage caused by the earthquake, India has extended urgent humanitarian assistance to support relief efforts in the region. In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs stated, "India extends humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan in the wake of the earthquake." The post shared by MEA, included images of trucks loaded with sacks of rice and other food items, reinstating India's commitment to stand by Afghanistan during challenging time.

External Affairs Minister (EAM), S Jaishankar had earlier spoken to Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi on Monday. He expressed condolences at the loss of lives in the disaster and affirmed support in the difficult time.

“Spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi today. Expressed our condolences at the loss of lives in the earthquake. Conveyed that India has delivered 1000 family tents today in Kabul. 15 tonnes of food material is also being immediately moved by Indian Mission from Kabul to Kunar. Further relief material will be sent from India starting tomorrow. Wish early recovery of those injured. India stands by Afghanistan at this difficult time,” stated EAM in an X post.
