An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit Greece on Thursday morning (08:49 IST). The quake struck close to Crete island sending tremors across the eastern Mediterranean. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicentre was located 83 km from Heraklion in Greece. The tremors were also felt in Türkiye, Egypt, and Libya.
The seismic activity prompted tsunami risk evaluations across the region, with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) confirming the tsunami threat evaluation. Following the earthquake, the EMSC issued a tsunami alert and warned people to move away from the coast and reach a higher place.
There are no initial reports of damage and casualties.

Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolted area near Fry, Greece on May 14. Tremors were felt around 4:21 am and Türkiye, Egypt, Greece, and Libya were the affected countries. The epicentre was 38 km from Karpathos, Greece. Initial assessments had measured the tremor at 6.4 magnitude, though the US Geological Survey later reported it as 6.1. BNO News reported that the quake caused moderate shaking in parts of Crete, Kasos, and Karpathos islands of Greece.
