Indonesia earthquake: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Papua region Friday morning, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The epicentre was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres (about 6.2 miles), which is considered relatively shallow. Such quakes can often cause more damage since the tremors are felt quickly at the surface.
Local authorities immediately deployed relief and rescue teams. Officials also warned that aftershocks could follow. Assessments are underway to determine the impact on buildings and residents. The tremors were strong enough to trigger panic in some areas.
Indonesia earthquake: Why is West Papua vulnerable?
This region of Indonesia lies within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Indonesia records hundreds of tremors every year. In 2018, a massive earthquake and tsunami claimed thousands of lives here.
So far, no major damage or casualties have been reported, but authorities have urged people to stay alert and avoid tall buildings or the coastline.
