4.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet After Nepal Tremors

Shallow earthquakes like these are more dangerous than deeper ones due to their greater energy release closer to the Earth's surface.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 hit Tibet on Friday, stated the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors struck the region at 9:27 am and were recorded at a depth of 20 kilometers, with the epicenter located at latitude 29.19°N and longitude 87.06°E. There have been no reports of initial damage and casualties. Notably, Tibet is a seismically active region due to its location at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Shallow earthquakes like these are more dangerous than deeper, as they release greater energy closer to the Earth’s surface. This results in stronger ground shaking and increased damage to structures and casualties, compared to deeper earthquakes, which lose energy as they travel to the surface.
