“It was quite dramatic on a Monday morning.” Television footage from Australian networks Sky News and Nine showed a white SUV with a smashed window abandoned next to a Russian flagpole on the grounds of the consulate in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra.
According to Reuters reports, New South Wales police said in a statement that officers reached Fullerton Street shortly after 8 am (2200 GMT) following reports of an unauthorised vehicle parked in the driveway of a property. The reports also said that the police attempted to speak with the driver, but he drove the vehicle into the gates of the consulate before being stopped.
A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene. The incident also left a 24-year-old constable injured on his hand, according to the police statement.
According to a BBC report, Police have revealed no further information about the driver or their motivation, but say inquires are ongoing. A witness told the Sydney Morning Herald that the man was arrested without an apparent struggle.
“I just saw the policemen draw their guns at the gentleman, asking the gentleman to come out of his car,” a neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, told the newspaper.
Another report quoting the neighbour said, “The policemen continued to ask him to get out of the car, he didn’t get out of the car. They drew their firearms.” He declined to give his name.
